*** New Phil theater! Starting performances January 14, 2003 at the Longacre Theater (New York *obviously*), Phil starts with Natasha Richardson in Miss Julie. "In Miss Julie, Richardson stars as the title character, a countess on a desperate mission to seduce her betrothed valet (Hoffman)." Read the article here.*** New Phil film! According to a report in Variety and The Hollywood Reporter, Anthony Minghella (director of The Talented Mr. Ripley) is behind an adaptation of the Charles Frazier novel COLD MOUNTAIN.Directly quoted from from "FilmForce" at IGN.com, June 04, 2002:
Commenting on the film's stellar cast, director Minghella said in a statement, "I could not be more thrilled with the quality of actor this material is attracting; it's a real testimony to the appeal of Charles Frazier's magnificent novel that we have been able to assemble such a formidable ensemble. This is an epic venture." The list, so far, includes Nicole Kidman, Jude Law, Renee Zellweger, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Giovanni Ribisi, Brendan Gleeson, Kathy Baker, Charlie Hunnam and Ray Winstone.
The story, partly inspired by Homer's Odyssey, centers around a wounded Confederate soldier named Inman (Jude Law), who sets out on a dangerous journey home to Carolina, in hopes of reuniting with his sweetheart, Ada (Nicole Kidman). With Inman gone, Ada struggles to revive her father's farm with the help of a young woman drifter (Renee Zellweger).
As previously reported by THR, Portman will be playing Sarah, a pregnant young woman (What is it with her and these pregnant roles?) that Inman meets on his journey.
Production on Cold Mountain is set to kick off next month, with shooting in Europe and the American South.
"...It is also rumored that Jude Law will exit the production and be replaced by Matthew McConaughey." --Hollywood Reporter, June 6, 2002 (let's hope not, eh??? jude law rocks!)

*** Fritz updates us that Love Liza will probably be in theaters between Thanksgiving and Christmas (that's the end of November and the end of December for non-T and C day folks)*** Apparently Phil is going to direct a new Stephen Adly Guirgis play for LAByrinth called Our Lady of 121st Street. It's opening in August. Hopefully I'll be able to check up on this soon but the LAByrinth site just is not working for me right now.(thanks Lee)
*** Jesus Hopped the A-Train has reopened in London at the Arts Theatre till until at least June 22nd. Its the same cast in the three main roles. The Arts is a slightly bigger theatre than the Donmar so there is more chance for tickets for anyone who wants to see this terrific production with some of the best acting in London at the moment.
*** Phil will be in the upcoming Spike Lee film The 25th Hour. (character name of Jacob Elinsky, apparently one of the Edward Norton character's close friends). Production should be happening right now. Add Spike Lee to the list of awesome directors that Phil has worked with now. The film will star Edward Norton (mmm....). Plot: "A young man enjoys his last day of freedom before beginning his seven year jail term for drug dealing. Over the course of the next 24 hours, he gets a new appreciation of life and his role in it, but is his realization too late?". Listed for release on December 6, 2002. So assume a July 2003 release. This picture is being made for Disney. *shudders in horror*
*** Production on Voltage has been pushed back indefinately due to lack of funding.
*** Red Dragon is currently in post production. That will make two Edward Norton-Philip Seymour Hoffman films coming up, by the way. The release date has been set (never permanently) at October 4, this year. Unconfirmed hearsay reports: "the first teaser trailer may appear in theaters on June 14th, 2002, attached to The Bourne Identity and Windtalkers. " The Bourne Identity is a Chris Cooper film.
