For those of you who don't want to read about the play stop here. Otherwise, i'll give you a basic rundown of the show. The set is of a pretty chessy kitchen, set somewhere in California in the 70's (I think). Phil plays Austin, the screenwriter son who comes to his mothers house to take care of it while she goes to Alaska (I think to "find herself, but it's not made clear). John plays the other brother, Lee, who makes a living by stealing things out of peoples houses and reselling them. He has been in the desert living for the past few months, and has come to see his mother, not really knowing she wasn't going to be there.
The rest plays on their relationship (or lack thereof) Austin is there trying to write that "one great screenplay", and Lee is in the way. Austin has a meeting with a producer, which Lee immediatly turns into a meeting about a story line HE has in mind, and the producer says he loves it, drops Austins' ideas, but the catch is austin has to write Lee's screenplay. Tension ensues!!! So they write the screenplay (or attempt), all the while they seem to be switching roles. (ie, Austin wants to become more of a free man in his life, and Lee wants to confrom to "Hollywood" living). At one point, Lee dares Austin to go steal anything, saying he coulnd't even steal a toaster without getting caught. The next sceen, austin is completely smashed drunk and there are 15 toasters on the counter. He proceeds to make toast as Lee gets more and most pissed off that austin is drunk and not paying atttention.
They rip apart the kitchen, destroying everythig in sight, then the mother comes home. she's a little....how shall I say? unblanaced. she freaks, a fight ensues between austin and lee, and end of story is, austin freaks and kills lee by accident. it's deep. and slightly disturbing.
OK, now the juicy part: HE'S SOOOOO DREAMY!!! what i found amazing was, the whole time, i kept thinking "how would he play the other part?" (for those of you who don't know, they switch roles every three days. ) it was amazing to see the two of them on stage. Their chemistry is wonderful, and although it got off to a shaky start, they gelled together once they got in the groove. the house was packed (it was opening night of previews) and alas, there was an unbelieveable crowd waiting for them after the show, so i did not get to meet the dreamy man. but i'm planning on going back to see them reverse the roles and do a matanee, so i WILL see him then. Oh, forgot one thing: there was a part where JCR had his shirt off for a time and all i kept thinking was: I HOPE PHIL PLAYS IT THE SAME WAY!!!
The theater is nice and small; there is basically no bad seat in the house (unless you are on the extreme sides, but it's kinda hard not to see things anyway.) it's done in the round - actualy, three quarters round, but they still call it the round. I highly recommend anyone coming in to see the show. Also, if anyone is interested, i picked up a few extra playbills; if you'd like one, let me know. you'll have to pay postage (plus maybe a handling fee, i havne't decided - depends on demand). They are not signed or anything, but it's just to have.
Anyhoo, hope this gives you some insight into the show. He was wonderful; so electric and amazing and just such a presence on the stage; if you have the opportunity grab it!!!!!
