1. What is Philip Seymour Hoffman's birthday?

Answer: Phil was born on July 23rd, 1967 (this makes him 5 days younger than Vin Diesel). I assume that would make July 23rd his birthday. So, to figure out, from that information, how old Phil is at any given time, you take the current year, punch it into a calculator, and subtract the number 1967 from that. Or you could just do it in your head.

2. How tall is Phil exactly?

Answer: According to a radio interview with Phil, he is 5'10" tall (he said so himself on said interview.) though I have heard conflicting views from fans who have met Phil, saying he is not quite that tall. In any case, if Phil says he's 5'10", let him be 5'10". I'm 10'5", so I understand how he feels. Oh, yeah, and there is another interview where he says he's not *quite* 5'10"... But you know as much as I do now. Presumably. I mean, if you are Phil, Phil's parent/sibling/significant other/coworker, you're likely to know more about it than me.

3. Was that Phil I saw in The Jackal and Enemy of the State?

Answer: Heck no. That was Jack Black. Please see the Lookalikes page for more info!!! Thanks!! (Don't worry, my friend Sara & myself made the SAME mistake!!!) I really do have quite a time though with people who get these two mixed up. Jack Black has a rounder face and a much shriller tone to his voice (also more nasal undertones). Jack is part of Tenacious D. If you've seen High Fidelity, Jack Black is the pissy guy who works with John Cusack who sings 'Let's Get it On' at the end. He's also in Saving Silverman with Jason Biggs, and is the star and title character of Shallow Hal, with Gwyneth Paltrow. Who was in The Talented Mr. Ripley with Phil. There's your connection. Make the most of it.

      c/o Phil's Phans
      P.O.Box 249

5. What's Phil been in/up to lately?

Answer: Well now, the answer to this one changes. So go visit my News Page for the latest update on what Philip Seymour is doing these days. But if you want to know what all the film/television/theater work he's done, I suggest checking the Filmography page.

6. Is he married/divorced/single/dating/living in sin/etc and is he gay/straight/bi/trans/none of my damn business?

Answer: Philip Seymour Hoffman is a self-identified heterosexual male.

Remember -- he needs a modicum of privacy too.

All that being said, as of February 2003, Phil is romantically linked to LAByrinth Theater costume designer Mimi O'Donnell. They have a son together, Cooper Alexander. Further details are not known at this time about the baby. See the News page for the latest updates.

7. I'm an old friend of Phil's and I want to get in contact with him: Can you help me?

Answer: Nope. Sorry. Wish I could. My best advice is to write to the fan mail address and see what happens.

8. I used to know Phil/I grew up with Phil/I'm a friend of the family's and some of your info is not correct.

Answer: Well, it's not really a question. Ok, I try to make sure that my info is as accurate as possible. A great deal of it comes from interviews with Phil - instances in which he directly claims the truth of such statements. Now, not to seem rude or oblivious to the possibility of misprints/creative license on the part of interviewers - but I am more willing to believe Phil/Phil's relatives than anyone else when it comes to info about his life. Yeah. So, anyway, unless you have substantial evidence to disprove any of my info or have some verification of your connection to Phil, please don't just say 'you're wrong'... thanks.

10. What is Phil's real name?

Answer: As opposed to his fake, subversive, commie pink-o name? Phil's real name is Phil. He was asked in an article as to why he used his middle name and he replied "That's my name" and also, the name 'Philip Hoffman' is already taken by the SAG [Screen Actors Guild].

11. Who are you? Are you Phil?

Answer: Hello, my name is Daryn. That is why this site is called daryn's PSH page and not something else that would be different and indicate that the site is not run by someone that has 'daryn' in their name. I have a site that is all about me if you're interested at all in the fascinating heap of fava beans that is my life. I've been a Phil fan for a while, but you can read about that in the Misc. section of this site where it is described in somewhat exhaustive detail. This is me:

daryn
well this is what i would look like in south park

Where does Phil stand politically?

Answer: On a giant purple mushroom on Jupiter. Ummm... I mean... This question has arisen from glimpses caught of Phil at the 2000 Republican and Democratic National Conventions. Phil attended this event as part of the cast and crew of Last Party 2000 in which he interviewed various Political leaders. The only definate information that I currently have regarding Phil's political affiliations is that he did, indeed vote for Nadar in the 2000 presidential elections. Which I totally approve of, by the way, not like my own politics are important at this point. But anyway, if you want a better idea of Phil's personal politics [if you really care or it matters to you] then I suggest trying to catch him on Politically Incorrect [or just read the transcript] or seeing Last Party 2000 whenever, if ever, it comes out. Yeah. Also, I hear mention that he feels very strongly about the Screen Actor's Guild and the breakdown of unionism in America, but don't quote me on that.

What's this injury I keep reading about?

Answer: In his sophomore year of high school, Phil sustained an injury to his neck while wrestling. This prevented him from continuing his hobby of playing multiple sports, especially such contact sports as wrestling and football. He was going to go out for baseball, however, when he tossed in his mit in favor of an audition for the school play. A girl he had a crush on was also doing this and that was part of the reason he went for it as well. Yeah, so that's the story. Ummm... yeah. You know, I think John Malkovich got into acting cuz of a girl...

When was Phil on Politically Incorrect and the Rosie O'Donnell Show? Where can I see pictures or read transcripts of these and other appearances?

Answer: Phil has made two appearances on The Rosie O'Donnell Show. I have on this site the transcript from his first, solo appearance on January 25th, 2000. I have the transcript for his second appearance, with John C. Reilly on March 9th, 2000, as well as pictures on this site from that appearance. I do not have pictures from any of Phil's appearances on Politically Incorrect, however I do have the transcript of his appearance on December 7th, 1999, and I'm not sure if he has made more than one. Phil also appeared on The Charlie Rose Show, along with True West co-star John C. Reilly in June, 2000. Phil also appeared on Inside the Actors Studio in 2000, as I recall it was right around the same time frame as his Charlie Rose appearance. I have pictures and a transcript of that appearance. I also have a transcript and pictures from Phil's January 9, 2003 appearance on The Daily Show with John Stewart. Also check out pictures of Phil on The Caroline Rhea Show in February 2003. Read that transcript here.

What is Phil's religious affiliation(s)? [aka 'Is Phil Jewish?']

Answer: According to Phil's sister Emily [hi!], the Hoffman kids were not raised particularly religious. Their mother hails as a Catholic and their father was a Protestant but is now affiliated with... the Catholic church. There is some speculation that the family has Jewish ancestors but it's not confirmed. However, I don't have any information as to Phil's current and personal religious preferences. As far as I can recall, this is the information I was provided with. I hope that if I messed it up somehow I'll be informed and I'll correct it.

Can you provide me with Phil's EMAIL ADDRESS?

Answer: No I cannot. First of all, I don't even know as Phil *has* an email address. He's not particularly into the internet if you see what I mean. Aside from that, even if I did have access to his email address I certainly would not be at liberty to be sharing it out to fans. If you want to contact Phil, send a letter to the fan mail address provided.

How long have you spent on this? Don't you have a life?

Answer: As you would know if you read the Misc Page (or even the Site News) I started this site on December 4-5, 1998. So do some math and that is how long I've been doing this. As to whether I have 'a life' or not... that would naturally depend on your definition of 'a life'. If you mean do I ever get out, go places with friends, interact with other people on a regular basis -- yes I do. I spend more time away from my computer than I do in front of it these days, but you have to remember that I spent a lot of time laying the organizational foundation of this site so that updating now is a much more streamlined process than it used to be.

But basically, yes I have a life. Do you?

Was Phil adopted?

Answer: Nothing I have ever read or been told has even so much as slightly suggested or implied that Phil is anything but the biological child of his mother and father (see the Bio Info page for more info).

Does Phil smoke? Did he quit smoking?

Answer: Several fans who have attended past theater performances and met or seen Phil after shows have reported that he was smoking cigarettes. I am not aware at this point of his status as either a smoker or a non-smoker.
